Abstract:	Exercise science is an evolving field that continually seeks to understand the complex interactions between physiological factors and physical performance. Among the various metabolites, ketone bodies have started to gain increased attention due to their significant impact on exercise physiology. While traditionally known as merely energy substrates, recent research reveals that ketone bodies serve an extensive role as signaling metabolites, influencing a variety of biological processes that are of crucial importance to exercise science.We delve into the mechanistic basis of how ketone bodies, as signaling metabolites, affect exercise metabolism, performance, recovery, and adaptation. The findings from our review underscore the imperative to reassess traditional views on ketone bodies, highlighting their roles extending beyond mere energy provision. The application of this understanding in exercise science can revolutionize our approach to optimizing performance and recovery in athletes, paving the way for groundbreaking strategies in sports nutrition and performance enhancement.
