Title: An Additive Decomposition in Σ* Extensions

Abstract: A classic topic in symbolic summation is determining whether a given sum can be expressed in closed form and, computing such a form if the answer is positive. An additive decomposition splits the sum into a summable part and a minimal non-summable part. In this talk, we present an algorithm for computing an additive decomposition in Σ* extensions. Typical examples for Σ* extensions are difference fields generated by harmonic numbers. If time permits, we will discuss how to develop additive decompositions in ΠΣ* extensions. This is joint work with Shaoshi Chen, Hui Huang and Carsten Schneider.
