Abstract: Thanks to the work of many mathematicians (including Lusztig, Drinfeld, Feigin, Frenkel, Finkelberg, Mirkovic, Kuznetsov, Bezrukavnikov, Braverman, Gaitsgory,...), a certain sheaf (the semi-infinite IC sheaf) is known to play a basic role in many parts of representation theory and the Langlands correspondence. In the first part of the talk, we will attempt to give a motivated introduction to this circle of ideas. In the second half, we will describe some ongoing joint works (with Achar, Campbell, and Riche) concerning its applications in representation theory in characteristic 0 and characteristic p > 0.
