Title: Many-body Quantum Magic: Mathematics, Physics, and Quantum Computing

Abstract: Magic is a necessary but “expensive” kind of resource to drive universal fault-tolerant quantum computation. In this talk, I will introduce a series of (old and new) studies on magic of general many-body quantum systems, which have built a comprehensive quantitative theory of many-body magic, as well as bridged magic theory with condensed matter physics and quantum computing in various ways. Some key concepts/results that I plan to cover: 1) theory of magic measures, especially for the important qubit case that does not align well with the discrete Wigner formalism; 2) connection of magic measures of hypergraph states and Boolean analysis and coding theory techniques; 3) connection between many-body magic and MBQC power, in particular, a curious result that “too much” magic can jeopardize quantum computational power; 4) a no-go theorem showing that stabilizer models cannot characterize a large class of SPT phases in >1D, indicating the necessity of magic in certain important physical scenarios (somewhat contradicting the conventional belief in physics). Miscellaneous unpublished results will be covered if time permits.
